Bulawayo Tourist Information and Places to Visit

Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second largest city is a major commercial, industrial and tourist centre. The city is rich in historical associations and is the home of the National Museum. Nearby are the ancient Khami ruins, while to the south is the Rhodes Matopos National Park, notable for its exotic formations of huge walls boulder. Dams with excellent fishing, caves with rock paintings, Cecil Rhodes' grave and a well-stocked game park make this area popular with visitors.

Bulawayo is also known as the "City of Kings". It is a multicultural city with most residents able to speak at least three languages (including English, Ndebele, Kalanga, Sotho, Nambya, Tonga and Venda). The majority of the Bulawayo's population belongs to the Ndebele ethnic and language group, who descend from a 19th century Zulu migration and are a minority in Zimbabwe.

Places to visit:

If you're a fan of art, you'll love what Bulawayo has to offer

Amakhosi Theater: It is the country's pride when it comes to performing art. The Amakhosi Theater is the most prestigious stage in the country and being able to perform in it is considered both an honor and a pleasure. Before a show can be performed in the Akahosi Theater, it will have to undergo careful and meticulous review. You can be sure that only the finest works can be seen performed on this stage.

Museum of Natural History: It is considered the second largest museums in the southern hemisphere. The Museums of Natural History contains more than 70,000 specimens of wildlife and insects. There is also a collection of mining displays and, of course, historical exhibits.

National Art Gallery: Like other places in Zimbabwe, Bulawayo has a branch of the National Art Gallery. It contains a collection of both the traditional and modern art in different media such as paintings and sculptures. You can buy authentic tribal artifacts and other artworks in a shop located in the gallery's building.

When to Visit:

Whenever travel to Zimbabwe, the best and most suitable time is April through May and August through September. It is better to go to Zimbabwe in late April or early May as a consequence of the annual 6-day Harare International Festival in the Arts. It is the largest cultural event in a rural area and one of the leading festivals in Africa. The festival covers 5 disciplines of arts: music, theatre, spoken word, artworks, and dance.
