A truly remarkable place--Greenwich Village

Advantages: Many places to visit and all are free

Disadvantages: None

On 5 December 1997 Greenwich village became the UK's 17th World Heritage Site.

It covers a large area. Basically it includes the Old Royal Observatory, the National Maritime Museum, Queen's House, the old Royal Naval College and Greenwich Park.

Two years ago I visited the Old Royal Observatory which is famous for being the site of the prime meridian, or 0 degrees longitude .

On the entrance wall of it you can see a 24 hour clock and old standard measures of a yard, foot and inches. UK still measures distance using yards, feet and inches.

Inside the Old Royal Observatory you can see how people found out the time differences in different places. How clever they were.

In winter of 2008, close to Christmas I visited the National Maritime Musuem. It was a cold day but you still could see many visitors.

It is a museum specializing in the display of objects relating to ships and travel on large bodies of water. At the entrance of the museum there are two anchors.

On 8 March of 2009 I popped into the Queen's House. I was so early. I was the first visitor of the day.

The Queen's House is nowadays part of the National Maritime Museum. There are many carvings, paintings, sculptures, and other works of art on display; Some are replicas, some original.

When I was walking along the bank of the river Thames I saw a man's statue. One plaque is under the feet of the statue. If you read it , you will see 'Time is everything----five minutes makes the difference between Victory or Defeat.' Maybe you can find out who he was.

For more details and some pictures, you can visit an article in my blog entitled Trips to Greenwich Village. Thank you.

Summary: Beautiful village with many tourist sites
